In the world of PC modding, there's always a quest for the ultimate cooling solution, and YouTuber TrashBench has taken it to the extreme with their latest project. The goal? To drastically reduce the temperature of an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 graphics card without compromising its performance. And boy, did they deliver!
The Modding Madness
TrashBench's approach was simple yet ingenious. They started by maxing out the original fans' speed, which already resulted in an 8°C drop in GPU temperature. But that was just the beginning.
The first physical modification involved swapping the stock fans with three 120mm Arctic fans, further reducing the temperature by 10°C. But TrashBench wasn't satisfied, so they replaced those with even faster and louder fans, dropping the temperature by another 2°C.
To improve air flow, TrashBench added five tiny Arctic server fans spinning at an insane 15,000rpm. While these fans were noisy, they didn't provide any additional cooling benefits. So, the modder decided to go all out and installed a 360mm AIO liquid cooler on the backplate, after applying thermal putty to the PCB. This final modification resulted in a significant 9°C temperature drop.
The Results
The end result of this modding madness? An incredible 29°C to 33°C drop in GPU temperature, depending on the benchmark. The GPU now sits at a cool 34°C in Tomb Raider, a massive improvement over the stock temperature.
However, and this is where it gets interesting, this massive temperature drop didn't translate into significant performance gains. TrashBench measured a negligible 2fps increase over stock conditions, and even overclocking only netted an extra 7fps.
The Takeaway
What does this tell us? Well, personally, I think it highlights the importance of understanding the limits of cooling solutions. While it's tempting to go all out and add more fans or liquid cooling, there's a point of diminishing returns. No matter how much air you blast through a fin stack, there's only so much cooling benefit to be gained.
In my opinion, this modding project is a fascinating exploration of the boundaries of PC cooling. It raises questions about the practicality of such extreme modifications and the trade-offs between temperature and performance.
While fitting a liquid cooler directly to the GPU die might have provided better cooling, it's not always the most practical or cost-effective solution. Sometimes, less is more, and finding the right balance is key.
